Service

When we bought our house in Utah, it was winter and we didn't have a shovel when a storm came so we went to borrow one from our neighbor and he just gave us this one. It has made it through 6 winters of storms, but as you can see, it used to be about a third bigger. We just couldn't bring ourselves to throw it away because it reminded us of service and kindness. Everytime we used it we thought of our kind neighbor and of service. It was pretty hard to try to be sneaky and shovel someone else's driveway though because it left its "shovel print." It finally found its way to the garbage, but not without a picture.

All Packed Up!

This is our sealed container holding 6,000 lbs of our belongings ready to head for Hawaii via Seattle. Good-bye stuff! We sold a lot of our things so I could bring food storage. Who needs a couch when you have buckets of wheat and jars of fruit, really? But I've remembered how much I DON'T enjoy moving!!! The house was all packed up and on its way in two days. Pretty impressive. (That doesn't count all the going through and throwing away phase though.) It has been a cleansing process with lots of trips to DI and a few to the dump. We have enjoyed being able to simplify.

Bryn's January

Brynlee turned 3 months in January. She is adorable. I love when they start to get more expressive and you can consistantly gets smiles. We think she's beautiful!

This is a favorite outfit. She's a doll! I love the leg rolls!

She looks so big in her crib! And I love it that she sleeps with her hands up. Whitney did the same thing. And I don't remember with Makenna - I guess I will have to go check pictures.

When she first wakes up - she gives the cutest
super cheesy smiles. They make me melt!

I was changing her diaper and she found her thumb. She sucks on most anything and has only found her thumb a few times. I don't want her to be a thumb-sucker, but it just looks so cute! Since I want to discourage it, I had to take a picture of her sucking away.

I love these jammies. I should have taken pictures earlier. She looks a little too big for them - big buddha belly. She's getting chubby.

School Work Treasures

We started doing this with the girls' schoolwork to cut down on clutter. They each have a folder in the pantry to put things they make at school. When it gets full, they put all their treasures up on the fridge and we take a picture. And they will happily throw them away. It works out great for everyone - eliminates clutter but we still have documentation of their work.

Wish You Were Here!

Mike went to Hawaii without us to start working and we got a few huge snow storms. Kenna was a trouper to help me shovel. These are pictures of the second storm. It came the day after I had spent 2+ hours shoveling the day before. So I took these pictures to email to Mike. The subject title was "Wish You Were Here," but then in the body I said, "No wait - wish we were THERE!" Our friend came over for the next storm and plowed for us. Thanks, Donevan.

Thank You Grandma!!!

Mike left for Hawaii on the 19th of January to start working, but since he needed to come back to be able to see his brother, Matthew, home from his mission, we didn't go with him. As fun as it would be to do 3 6hr flights with three kids in two weeks, we decided to stay home and play with Grandma instead. Grandma came and rescued me. Not only was she a huge help with everything from dishes to bedtime, we had so much fun with her. One night, I was giving Brynlee a bath and heard the girls and Grandma playing with a balloon and all laughing hysterically. It was such a fun sound! I'm so grateful for the service that she gave. I wouldn't have survived without her help! Thank you, Mom!!!!

Shadow Mountain Fall Babies

This fall there were 5 babies born in 7 weeks. And then a few more in Dec and Jan. Crazy times. I caught all the moms at church so we could get a picture of the bumper crop. I thought this was the best one. Believe it or not, trying to take pictures of 5 babies - we just tried to get no one crying. It was useless to try to get them to all look the same way. Gabe is all smiles while the rest of them must be watching the angel doing cartwheels on the side. It is too bad Bryn is going to miss out on these first few years of them all becoming friends. Save her a spot, ok everyone?

And I couldn't help but get this close up of Brynlee and Cooper holding hands. And it begins. But, if she has to have someone - Cooper's a great choice! I love it that he is looking at her. So cute! She sends you kisses from Hawaii, Cooper!

Our Great Neighbor Vicki

This is our fabulous neighbor, Vicki. She has been another Grandma to my girls and good friend to me. We will miss her so much! This picture was taken at her 50th birthday party. Thanks for being such a wonderful neighbor and friend!

Gymnastics

This fall the girls started doing gymnastics with our neighbor, Jessie who is an amazing gymnast. They had a lot of fun and hope Jessie did too. For their last lesson she took them to open gym to play on the equipment and they loved it. Thanks, Jessie!!!!

Look at those pointed toes! She actually did a front flip off the beam and into the pit. Kind of fun!

Bryn's New Trick

Brynlee just learned to do this and does it all the time. The girls think it is hilarious that she can make such big bubbles. They don't quite understand why it is cute when Bryn does it and gross when they do - it is so hard to grow up, isn't it?!

2008 Year in Review

2008 was yet another banner year for the Johansons of Idaho Falls. We began the year amidst one of the longest and worst winters in recent past. We had record snowfall through January… February… March… April…. There may have been a slight reprieve in May, followed by a significant snow accumulation in June (yes, June…). It made us grateful for a warm, comfortable house, and provided opportunities to spend more time inside together as a family.

Whitney finished out her inaugural school year as a superstar kindergartner. She reads, she writes, she does tricks – if we could only get her to stop talking every now and again, we’d have it made! She’s a gifted communicator, and finds great joy in serving others. We’re amazed at her natural sense of charity toward others.

As Whitney started first grade, Makenna followed on her sister’s heels into Mrs. Merkley’s kindergarten. Katrina was a bit hesitant to let her ‘baby’ start school, but after many tears (not Kenna’s) and a little prying, Makenna boarded the bus and was off to fight the dragons of the public school system. It has been so gratifying to watch her develop her individual talents and abilities.

Since Katrina didn’t have anyone to play with (Makenna in school and all), we figured it wasn’t good for her to be alone, so Brynlee Lorene came home to keep her company. And…well, if she thought she was bored before, that sure fixed that. Our little Bryn was born October 3 (via natural, un-medicated childbirth – you rock, Katrina!) and has transformed our lives in a wonderful and exquisitely fulfilling way. She looks just like the other two, so we’ve got high hopes for how she’ll turn out. Her middle name, Lorene, comes from her Grandma Jones and Grandma Bowman’s middle names, and we hope she’ll be blessed with their amazing drive to learn, to laugh, and to love!

We, Katrina and Mike, are the parents, caregivers, breadwinners, and all the other joyous things that come with life with young children. We grew closer than ever before during this year, not just through the welcoming of Brynlee into our family, but also through working together on solutions to the everyday trials that present themselves. We find joy in being together.

Late in the year, we went to Hawaii for a few days (Mom, Dad, Bryn – the other two girls stayed home to milk the cows). We enjoyed our time there. We stayed at Turtle Bay on the North Shore of Oahu and saw some beautiful sights. The funny thing about it being an island is that there are beaches EVERYWHERE! We got there the day after a big international surf competition, which was rather unfortunate. Mike was all ready to rip the waves and show off his masterful precision on the board, but it turns out that a redneck mainlander from Idaho doesn’t quite match up with the chiseled coastal dwellers from around the world. Maybe next year….

While we were there, Bryn found this handsome fella (see below) and was kind of fond of him. After she begged and begged us to stay, we decided that was good enough of an idea and started plans to move there. Ok, ok. The real story is that Mike was offered a job at Brigham Young University Hawaii as the Director of Communications and Marketing. And after much deliberation (and a little bickering and singing of “Love At Home” on the couch), we took the opportunity and are now heading to a warmer clime and $5/gallon milk.

As the year ended, we were in the midst of selling most of our household possessions in preparation to move to a home that’s less than half the size of our Idaho home. We’re excited for the challenges, the opportunities, and the experiences that will definitely be a part of the story of 2009.

We are grateful for the many memories we created in 2008. From losing teeth to traveling to Kansas and Colorado, and from BBQs with Desmonds to bike rides around town, it has been a year to remember. We have been so richly blessed. To those with whom we’ve shared and built memories, to our families and loved ones near and far, we love you and thank you for your kindness and reciprocal devotion to us and the things that are most important.

Aloha 2009!
